Close examination to determine one or more pieces to change. You can see in this picture a defective rib, it's the most common problem: dismantling of the umbrella by taking down the metal wires connecting the ribs to the "nut" and the rings. Then, cutting the hooks (staples) that fix the canopy of the frame.

You have to find the right rib ! There are a great number of ribs. In the past they were made of solid steel, now they are made of empty steel (Paragon), even of aluminium for ultra light or fibreglass umbrellas for more flexibility.

But it's sometimes necessary to fabricate an identical rib, with much precision, down to the 1,5 mm diameter hole to pass the connecting wire. |

Reassembling the umbrella. When the ring, the shank or the "nut" is defective, the repair is more important. First you need to dismantle the umbrella, the ribs as seen before, but also the handle and the push button in order to dismantle the umbrella into separate peices. |

Then you have to replace the defective piece by combining with the diameters of the shank, the tips and the number of ribs.
Generally there are 8 ribs, formerly there were 10. Nowadays the tendency is for an ultra light umbrella models with an always more limited number of ribs.
